SARDINIA
The island
offers an almost primeval landscape of rocks sculpted by the
wind and sea, forests of holm and cork oaks, aromatic plants and
shrubs and the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean.
Alghero
The early history of this pleasant little walled port set amid
olive trees, parasol pines and eucalyptus is unknown. In 1354 it
was occupied by the
Catalans and it still retains a Spanish air.
Costa
Smeralda
It has one of the most indented coastlines of the island. Once a
region of farmers and shepherds in 1962 it was ‘discovered’
by the international jet-set. The development was headed by the
Aga Khan. The main resorts are Porto Cervo, Cala di Volpe and
Baia Sardinia.
Arzachena
owes its fame to its position in the heart of the Costa Smeralda
hinterland at the foot of a curious mushroom-shaped rock and its
proximity to important archaeological remains. |
